Ciarrocca, DMD, MSEd
Katharine Ciarrocca, a boarded oral medicine specialist, received her DMD, MSEd, and completed fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently the Director of Interprofessional Education and Practice at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. She has spent her 20+ year career in a setting where oral health care has been integrated into overall health care. Through interprofessional education and practice, she is a champion for advancing oral health as a part of whole person health by reconnecting the mouth with the rest of the body.

Background: The Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (OIPEP) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established a Student Executive Committee (SEC) to engage students in interprofessional activities. Workshop Description:
Designing quality interprofessional education and practice experiences requires top-down support. The recent 2019 guidance from the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative encourages institutional leaders to develop a systematic approach to foster IPE and engage with academic and community partners. Quality IPE starts with a clear plan for development and implementation across multiple professions. Each profession must consider context, teaching strategies, reasoning for the approach, competencies and learning outcomes that are salient for their own profession but also for the professions with whom they are collaborating. Additionally, there is a need to establish ‘social IPE’ where students have opportunities to get to know each other outside of formal, intentional IPE activities.
