Skills-based Workshop

Step by Step—Developing a Strategic Plan for Institutionalizing Interprofessional Education and Practice

Monday, August 19, 2019, 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Greenway A Room
Theme: Quality Interprofessional Education and Accreditation

Workshop Description:
Designing quality interprofessional education and practice experiences requires top-down support. The recent 2019 guidance from the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative encourages institutional leaders to develop a systematic approach to foster IPE and engage with academic and community partners. This workshop will address the theme of Quality Interprofessional Education and Accreditation by providing an overview of a strategic planning framework that participants can adapt to their own institution in order to develop sustainable IPE relationships. Our team will share lessons learned and strategies for success as part of this interactive presentation with the goal of giving participants the skills needed to design their own strategic planning initiative and offer mentorship in this process.

Learner Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1) Recognize the value of the strategic planning process;
2) Discuss opportunities and challenges when designing systematic IPE
3) Develop an implementation plan for strategic planning in their own institution.

We will include several active learning strategies including think-pair-share discussions and peer coaching techniques. For this session, participants will be guided through an interactive journey to understand the strategic planning process and will discuss the steps needed for implementing this process in their home institutions. We will present and apply several change theories to assist participants in thinking about the best strategies for implementing their strategic plan, including developing a mission and vision statement, key performance indicators and measurements for success. An agenda and plan for group interaction includes a 20 minute overview of the strategic planning process methodology. Participants will then work at their tables to design an implementation plan for bringing this process to their home institutions (20 minutes), followed by a large group debrief and discussion of institutional next steps for sustainable change (20 minutes).
