Wayne Cottam, DMD, MS

Dr. Wayne Cottam is the Vice Dean for the A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH). He oversees external clinical rotations and community partnerships for the school as well as participating in the senior administrative team. He developed an extensive external rotation program, partnering with over 70 community and safety net clinics for ASDOH 4th year clinical rotations. Dr. Cottam has taught Head and Neck Anatomy since coming to ASDOH and has received several outstanding faculty awards. Prior to coming to ASDOH, Dr. Cottam was the Dental Director with Community Health Centers in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Cottam graduated from the University of Utah in 1990 and attended dental school at the Oregon Health Sciences University, graduating with honors in 1993. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the University of Utah Hospital. In 1998 he received a Master’s Degree in Anatomy from the University of Utah Medical School. Dr. Cottam and his wife Marie have three daughters and one son.

The prevalence of oral disease is disproportionately high among people with low income, reflecting lack of access to dental care. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) benefit communities they serve by providing affordable dental care; however, many clinics face an overwhelming amount of no-show appointments. The objective of this program is to expand clinical interprofessional training experiences at partnering FQHCs to decrease no show rates in dental clinics.
