Meredith Bazemore, MPA, is the Director for the Office of Rural Initiatives (ORI) in the UNC School of Medicine. ORI was established in 2017 to align programs and support for recruitment, education, exposure, placement, and retention of primary care physicians to rural and underserved areas across North Carolina. ORI houses a number of programs including the Kenan Primary Care Scholars Program, Rural Interprofessional Health Initiative, First Generation Initiative in partnership with the Office of Special Programs and outreach programs across the state. The goal of ORI is to strengthen the pipeline of rural providers through alignment of rural-focused programs. Egnagement of community partners, preceptors, and Area Health Education Centers support the efforts to address health disparities and ultimatley impact health outcomes in rural North Carolina.

The Rural Interprofessional Health Initiative (RIPHI) takes a multifaceted approach to maximize the Quadruple Aim through interprofessional quality improvement work, responding to the increasing rural workforce needs in North Carolina, and developing interprofessional collaboration opportunities by creating a unique experience where healthcare professionals and students work as a team to implement population health interventions to improve care, and expose students to the unique needs of rural North Carolina.
