Deborah “Deb” Simpson, PhD is Academic Affairs Education Director for AdvocateAuroraHealth, a not-for-profit health care system whose physicians provide education to medical students, residents, fellows and other health professions. She is an adjunct clinical professor in family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) & at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). She is a Deputy Editor for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, a member of the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers’ Board of Directors and a public member of the Psychiatry Residency Review Committee-ACGME.

Background: Health professions education must be intentionally aligned and designed with the end in mind: to improve patient and learner outcomes. This is a challenging task as learners must meet the standards and competencies outlined by their sponsoring organization(s) in the context of a complex, fast paced clinical workplace.
