Carolyn Szafran earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and minor in secondary education from Washburn University; Masters of Science with emphasis in special education from Kansas State University; Masters of Social Work specializing in school social work from the University of Kansas.
Carolyn is a LSCSW with an active clinical practice. She is Director of the Practicum program and teaches full time in the Social Work Department at Washburn. Carolyn is a Certified Clinical Trauma and Compassion Fatigue Professional. She educates and supports trauma therapists to acknowledge and address secondary stress conditions and self-care relating to professional ethical standards.

Interprofessional education is foundational to creating a health care team prepared to improve patient outcomes, however, patients and families are often absent from the educational setting. Faculty from the School of Nursing, Department of Communication Studies, School of Business, and Department of Social Work collaborated to create a Poverty Simulation designed to engage students from all programs, residents from public housing, and academic-practice partners.
