National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health
Anita Duhl Glicken MSW, associate dean and professor emerita, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center, now serves as Executive Director of the National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health (NIIOH) providing support to a national movement to integrate oral health into primary care. Prior leadership roles include President of the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) and President/CEO of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants Health Foundation. In 2009, Ms. Glicken launched the PA Leadership Initiative on Oral Health, a model systems change strategy that engages national organization leaders to work together to integrate oral health across education and practice.

Since the release of Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General in 2000, primary care educators and clinicians have been encouraged to embed interprofessional Oral Health (OH) competencies across education programs. In 2000, the Surgeon General’s landmark report on ‘Oral Health in America’ prompted a sense of urgency for primary care education to increase provider understanding, skills, and ownership of oral health (OH) care. Primary care clinicians including physicians, PAs, nurses, pharmacists, and dental professionals are now working to embed oral health and interprofessional practice competencies across their education programs.
